Description

Lot 511 is a radiant showcase of 100% Grüner Veltliner. Sourced from one of the preeminent standard-bearers of the AVA, this wine is a beautiful counterpart to its Austrian cousin – showing a New World fruited character while still possessing Grüner’s distinct acidity and minerality, it’s a delicious Californian take on a Danube River classic (with 90+ scores from the majors in previous vintages to boot). Available at the tasting room for over $30/bottle, $360/case, it’s yours today for 60% OFF – a dynamite price for one of the rarest white varietals in America.

Vibrant aromas of lemon, yellow apple, pear, and herbs practically dance out of the glass. A bright, energizing palate entry with nuances of fennel pollen and ginger is bolstered by pronounced minerality and exceptional medium+ acidity. The finish is clean and refreshing, unfolding with delicate waves of additional apples and pears before fading gracefully with ripples of white blossom.

For the very first Grüner Veltliner in this program’s history, we knew we had to find something special.

The flagship grape of Austria known for being the darling of sommeliers everywhere (Jancis Robinson went so far as to say that no self-respecting restaurant wine list could afford to be without one), Grüner has a well-earned reputation for being a bright, versatile wine excellent for food pairing. Americans have taken notice – since the mid-2000s, a handful of pioneering winemakers began growing their own, with the best expressions found in California’s cool coastal regions. Today’s release is one such gem from arguably the finest domestic Grüner-producing region of them all: the Edna Valley.

Edna Valley’s east-west orientation in the shadow of the Santa Lucia Mountains funnels wind and fog from the Pacific, creating a long and cool growing season perfect for Grüner. Calcareous oceanic and porous volcanic soils provide ideal conditions for deep root development, and an almost constant wind keeps canopies healthy and thickens grape skins. Picked at perfect ripeness and cold fermented in 100% stainless steel to preserve freshness, the wine saw no malolactic or lees stirring – a time-tested, minimal intervention approach from a local winemaker who has spent decades perfecting the craft.
