This is their most expensive and iconic wine, selling for $295\/bottle in Australia. We were allowed the privilege of purchasing just 80 cases of this magnificent wine (I had to buy quite a bit of 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon to get my hands on it :-).\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the priciest wine I have ever offered in the Lot program, but it's worth every penny.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou've likely never heard of Shane Harris but he's a legend in Australia. In 2012, 2018 and 2021, he was named Australian Winemaker of the Year by Australia’s leading wine industry publication, Winestate Magazine (Australia's version of the Wine Spectator). In 2012 and 2014, Wines by Geoff Hardy was also named Winestate Magazine’s Australian Wine Company of the Year, an award based on individual wine scores throughout the year. Shane also played an important role in earning the company’s five red star rating in James Halliday’s Wine Companion, a top rating only awarded to 10% of Australian wineries. The 2016 Tzimmukin was named as one of the Top 10 red blends by The Real Review.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnly produced in special vintages (the last being 2016), the Tzimmukin is made from partially air-dried grapes from the best parcels of their K-1 estate vineyard in the rolling Adelaide Hills region. In the past, the wine has been a blend of Cabernet and Shiraz but, in 2019, they decided to do 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wine was originally presented to us at our epic two-day 500 wines tasting and, I'll admit, at first I didn't get it. It had a concave bouquet, was supremely tightly wound and simply impenetrable on the palate. Still, I thought, there is gobs of structure and potential here - lets see where this goes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSure enough, the next day the bouquet had really started to bloom and we spent the next several days watching this wine come to life. By the end of the week it was really singing, and I decided then and there it would be assigned as Lot 350.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wine arrives next month but here are my notes from a recent tasting of one of the samples I brought home with me last Summer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDay One: deep purple in the glass with just a kiss of ruby around the rim. Tightly wound aromatics with a concave bouquet that draws you donw into the glass but gives up very little. The palate is the same, just a wall of tannins. Nope, let's cork this up and see where it goes...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCouple days later things are looking better...the bouquet is vibrant and sexy with blackberry, mulberry and black cherry interlaced with currant notes that provide lift to the sensuous, rich, high-quality oak. Peppery gumtree, spicy clove and cinnamon florals complex the nose. Vibrant, muscular and sinewy but surprisingly elegant on the palate with beautifully-integrated, minerally tannins interlaced with black and red fruits in a big, lush, palate-staining finish with big, chalky length and resounding fruit that echoes for a good minute or more. Wow. Cereal farmers and grain brokers with a passion for the vine, Francis actually tried to get the rights to plant a vineyard near Caen but could not persuade the authorities to let him (he admits that he has two feet in the soil but a head sometimes in the clouds). However, an opportunity soon came along in the form of Philippe Pichard, the fifth generation to run his family’s domaine in Chinon. But he had no heir, and when the Jourdans offered to buy into the domaine as partners, he agreed.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ePichard went organic in 2000, and, after the Jourdans came on board, the domaine received biodynamic certification from Demeter in 2015. The Jourdans embraced the philosophy—it was their wish to make wines as naturally as possible.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eToday, the domaine farms 44 acres divided into 20 parcels. Nearly 80% of these vines are within a mile and a quarter of the winery, which lies in the eastern part of the Chinon appellation near the village of Cravant-les-Côteaux. This is the small Vienne River valley, and the domaine’s vines start pretty much at the river, range across the plain (or benchland, if you prefer), and extend up to the plateau above Cravant. At the river, the soils are sand and gravel; the plain is limestone and much more clay; and the hillside heading up to the plateau has clay with a lot of limestone. Each cuvée is grounded in its geology. All the vines are hand-harvested and the grapes are de-stemmed.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAfter working with the Jourdans for nine years, Philippe Pichard retired in 2021.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cstrong data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe top cuvée, L'Arcestrale, is an homage to fine Bordeaux, made only in good years.\u003c\/strong\u003e This comes from the domain's best Cab Franc vines, which grow in two parcels on the plain and the hillside, and the wine is aged in wood, 25% of which is new. The result is pure, concentrated-yet-elegant Cabernet Franc using organic principles from average 45-year-old vines. Certified as singular examples, each wine must pass a Council panel tasting right after fermentation and then again prior to release in the marketplace. The wines must be determined as ‘excellent’ in the organoleptic analysis and equal to a minimum of 93 points on the OIV tasting sheet used by the Council.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe first ‘Viñedo Singular’ is from the El Saúco vineyard. El Saúco is a key component to the consistently 96-100 point scoring (Wine Advocate), $300-$450 Contador bottling from Benjamin Romeo. It is also the source for his 95-point scoring, $225\/bottle blanco known as \"El Saúco Parcel No. 5\".\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is pedigreed soil to say the least.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Los Herreros vineyard is even higher up in Rioja, located just outside the remote village of Quel, the home of famous Spanish poet and playwright, Manuel Bretón de los Herreros. The vineyard is an amalgam of sand, silt and micro-layers of clay, located right next door to the El Arca Vineyard (featured in the pic above), itself a $125\/bottle old-vine Garnacha. Again, this is highly-pedigreed soil.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese pinnacle expressions are not inexpensive (these would normally be selling for well over $150\/bottle in US); however, they are fantastic. At $70\/bottle, I think these are quite reasonably priced.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was lucky to get my hands on 20 cases of each (each has less than 250 cases produced).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGiven the tiny quantities and to make it more digestible, I thought it best to just allow you to mix-and-match with the other Manuel Quintano selections. Everything in the MQ portfolio is quite age-worthy and insanely reasonably priced IMHO.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn the palate, these wines remind you of highly refined Burgundy or Bordeaux, exquisite structures and pinpoint accuracy layered over lithe, sinewy structures that will require a bit of time and patience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI hope the collectors amongst us jump at this opportunity. With an aging potential of 15-20+ years, these wines were built to the nines and would be fantastic additions to your cellar. Again, very specific, tiny plots of ancient vines, hand-harvested and matured in a no-expense-spared French oak regimen. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eManuel Quintano \"El Saúco\" 2018 Rioja Alavesa\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFrom an 80+-year-old vineyard plot of the same name, El Saúco is 100% Tempranillo rooted to sandy calcareous soils from an ancient seabed located at about 1500 ft. in elevation. The finished product is aged in French oak for 20 months before bottling, and has a big, bold graphitic structure elevated with outstanding minerality - Bordeaux fans should absolutely love this wine. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDeep, dark garnet on the pour, a broad fruit spectrum is wide across the (still) youthful bouquet (it is a 2018 after all, crazy!) framed by a new wood, no-expense-spared profile. Just as broad and long on the palate, with incredible, rich and dense depth, the graphite is just beginning to emerge amidst deep blackberry jam and vanilla blossom flavors. The finish is long and resonant with cherry-spiked oak spices. The complexity emerges on the open palate bringing in black peppercorns and piquant red fruits surrounded by new leather against deftly interwoven acidity. A long, dry finish possessing strong minerality and spice makes way for elegant waves of sliced vanilla beans and the slightest hint of cherry umami.
