Baby Didier Dagueneau Silex?

Yeah, no.

Raised in custom-built oak "egg" fermenters and specialized elongated barrels, the $150-$200/bottle Didier Dagueneau "Silex" bottling is a no-expense spared and highly-stylized wine. I haven't had one in probably five years but it is spectacular stuff - bombastic, intense and highly-concentrated but also suave and beautifully-put together. Highly recommended.

But take a look at this AOC Pouilly map. You'll see the official "Silex" terroir in purple (Les Chailloux), primarily surrounding the small village of St. Andelain in the center of the map. Now, look at this Google map and you'll see there are two domaine that sit astride the hillock - Dagueneau and Champeau (you might need to ZOOM IN to see Domain Champeau just north of Dageneau). These wines share the same incredible "Silex" terroir; however, they are miles apart in terms of style.

The heavy concentration of "Silex" (AKA "gunflint") in the red clay vineyards surrounding St. Andelain imparts the trademark "smoky" or "flinty" top note as well as the racy acidity that defines the "Silex" Sauvignon Blancs as the best of the region. It is also why the term "Fumé", which means "smoke" in French, is added to the name of the region, Pouilly Fumé.

The Champeau Pouilly Fumé "Silex" is a vin de terroir - complex, beautifully balanced, gorgeous, and approachable wine that values a pure reflection of its flinty terroir. Unlike the Dagueneau, it sees no oak influence whatsoever. And the terroir here is world-class, raising up a wine of crystalline purity, mouthwatering richness, freshness and complexity.

While very little of anything Domaine Champeau produces makes its way to the USA (the only way I was able to get my hands on any was through my winemaker friend in Bordeaux), I think its very fair to say you would pay $30-$40/bottle for this wine through traditional 3-tier distribution channels (this is not the regular Pouilly Fume bottling but the special "Silex" bottling).

We have 168 cases coming over on our next containers out of Bordeaux early next month and the wine is now priced at just $119/6-pack case plus $10 shipping.

Drink now or cellar over the next 5-7 years.

Medium to pale straw in the glass with a light gray reflection. The bouquet is effusive with flint and exotic fruits like mango, passion fruit and lychee rounded out with spicy vanilla and honeyed almond blossoms. A light citrus note further complexes the bouquet. Soft and supple on entry, immediately complex with flinty mango notes that resolve in a long, pure, mouthwatering supernova of passion fruit and rock. Fantastic!
