Wine Details & Tasting Notes

Make no mistake about it: Friuli Venezia Giulia is the region where, in the 1970s, Italy’s white wine quality renaissance began. Today, Friuli Venezia Giulia offers Italy’s biggest line-up of outstanding white wines...No other region in Italy offers as large a selection of outstanding whites from so many different grape varieties as Friuli Venezia Giulia does, while the region’s native red grapes yield wines that are equally distinctive...Collio has long enjoyed the loftiest reputation of all FVG denominations.

Sourced directly from the cellars of Tenuta Sant'Helena in Friuli's finest appellation, Collio (meaning "hills"), this stunning lineup sourced directly from the cellars of Tenuta Sant'Helena. I promise, these are all fantastic wines with complex, gorgeous bouquets and crisp, delicious mid-palate's exuding the fantastic terroir from which they were born. They drink beautifully now and will benefit from further ageing for another 5+ years. The Pinot Grigio will simply change the way you think about Pinot Grigio. The Sauvignon will thrill you with its intensity. The Ribolla Gialla will regale you, the Friulano will beguile you. If you love beautiful, dry whites its probably a good idea to grab a couple of these cases - these wines will drink well for years to come.

All of these 2020 whites have been rated 91-92-points from James Suckling (as he has pretty much continuously for years) and are incredibly-well-priced at $14+/bottle DELIVERED vs their $22-$27 frontline retail plus shipping. We are purchasing the exact same wines reviewed below and I have included Mr. Suckling's tasting notes as they are spot on and drama free (unlike mine own :-).

This 12-bottle sampler includes 3 x bottles of each of the following wines.

White peach, sliced pear, lemon curd and honeysuckle on the nose. Some chalk and white pepper, too. It’s medium-bodied with a creamy, rounded texture. Layered, fresh
and balanced.
91-POINTS James Suckling

Aromas of grapefruit zest, guava, green apple and chalk. It’s medium-bodied, creamy and deliciously fruity with bright, zesty acidity. Excellent concentration.
92-POINTS James Suckling

A subtler nose of apricot stones, blanched almonds and waxed lemons with some dried-fennel notes. It’s medium-bodied with bright acidity and a silky texture. Mineral finish.
91-POINTS James Suckling

Dried lemons, apricots and peach blossom on the nose with some white pepper and honeycomb. It’s medium to full-bodied with fresh acidity and a creamy, lightly oily texture. Ripe and floral expression. Delicious now.
92-POINTS James Suckling

More about the producer: Within the gorgeous frame of the vineyards in Vencò-Dolegna del Collio, a few steps from the boundary with Slovenia, Tenuta Sant’Helena stands out. The mild climate, provided by the pro-tection of the Julian Alps northwards and the openness to the Adriatic sea southwards and the fertile soil made up of sandstone marls from Eocene origin create a magnificent environment for grape growing. “Ponca” is, in the Friulian language, the name of this superb terroir. It represents the fundamental starting point from which particular production styles are developed, such as the cold maceration of white grapes, through a short contact with the skins, and a light raisining of red grapes, that are enriched with structure and personality. This is how wines with an intriguing aromatic set, a robust and embracing body and astonishing evolution potentialities are created.
