We don’t usually find ourselves buying so much Russian River Valley Chard in such a short time, but when you have both the extraordinary quality and crop yields of 2023, exceptions have to be made when the opportunities come knocking. Through industry connections, a call came to our office we just couldn’t resist – access to a single-vineyard Chardonnay from one of the most recognizable names in Sonoma.

This vineyard boasts all the key elements that make the Russian River Valley a Chardonnay stronghold: it sits low on the floodplains where the fog lingers an extra few hours every morning, and the extended growing season allows the grapes to ripen while retaining their natural acidity. Vines are rooted to the AVA’s renowned sandy Goldridge loam, whose excellent drainage and moderate fertility encourages roots to grow deep in search of moisture and limits canopy vigor; marvelously elegant fruit is the result.

Decade after decade, our source has relied on this vineyard to perfect their signature offering. After harvesting, the fruit underwent full malolactic fermentation to develop a gentle creaminess before aging in a delicate barrel program of 100% French oak (20% new wood) to allow the fruit and terroir to develop and shine.

On the nose, you’ll encounter an inviting bouquet of classic apples and pears, interwoven with subtle garden herbs and a delicate touch of hazelnut before culminating with a hint of starfruit. The palate opens with a beautifully rounded entry, showcasing notes of toast, lemon curd, citrus, and a touch of flint. The wine’s balanced acidity and creamy texture provide a lovely backdrop to a surprisingly prominent minerality, making for remarkable structure. The finish is long and lightly spiced, with an umami-filled exit that further reveals the wine’s intricate palate. Delicious.
