This wine is from the same producer as N.108 through N.112 Fair Play wines.
The vineyards of the El Dorado's Fair Play District occupy the transitional foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at elevations between 2,000- and 3,000-feet. As a result, the region has one of the larger diurnal swings in California. Renowned for powerful Zinfandel's that have, mercifully, been reigned in from the excesses of the 2000's, today the region produces wines of both power and grace and a great deal more precision.
This release is the fifth of several "Reserve" designated lots I purchased, all with 30+ price tags and all largely the winemaker's blends (we added 2% of the Syrah we purchased from same producer). With 30% new American oak and a regular retail in the mid- $30's, N.114 is an exceptional value at only $10/bottle equivalent. Only 300 cases available.
Deep ruby garnet. Remarkably high-toned and expressive with cherry and blackberry fruit underpinned with vanilla and cocoa powder. Red rock and mineral are in the background for now but I suspect they'll come to fore with another month or two in bottle (has two now). While a full-bodied wine, this is a very elegant take on the varietal, valuing fruit expression and elegance over power and extract. Fleshy and chewy on entry, tightly wound for now, but the balance is perfect. Will become decidedly more expressive with just a bit more time in the bottle.
