OG N.119 2018 Chalk Hill Syrah SHIPS LATE JANUARY
N.119 Chalk Hill Syrah comes to us from the same producer as N.118 Chalk Hill Malbec. True to previous form, the Syrah is an open-knit style, big and bold and immediately accessible with five-to-seven-years of ageing capability. I liked this wine so much I paid as much as, if not more than, many Napa Cabernets I purchased. Big, bold, lush and juicy, these wines will have broad appeal. The Syrah has 90-94 point scores, year-in, year-out from the Wine Spectator. Given how good the 2018 vintage was its easy to see this wine slotting into the mid-90's again. $60 out of the winery tasting room, yours for just $15/bottle, $180/case.
Not quite as dark as the Malbec but still inky. Sweet sage and smoked game are woven around a core of blueberry and raspberry fruit, graham cracker spice and little streak of diesel dirt (how the dirt under my grandfathers old tractor used to smell). Iodine and pepper come to the fore with air but its worth noting that the wine is still coalescing its bottle bouquet and will be fantastic once it comes together sometime in late February/early March. The wine is supple and smooth on entry with warm fruit and spicy herbs perfectly attenuated across a ripe tannin framework and long, resounding finish.
