Lot 269 | 2017 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml (Gold Medal)

$70/bottle under the original label

This wine comes to us from some gents I have pretty much known my entire time as a negociant. Collectively, they have well over 70-years of experience producing wine throughout California and are founding members of the winemaking teams for many a well-known brand from the 80's and 90's. They pretty much know every vineyard in the state and know just about better than anyone how to make terroir-driven wines with broad appeal.

They produce their wines at an A+ winery in Napa Valley and have an assortment sourced from top terroirs throughout the state. Today's offering comes to us from their Spring Mountain program.

Given the difficulty in finding high quality Napa Valley Cabernet under $100 a bottle these days, I think its fair to say this Spring Mountain Cabernet is quite reasonably priced at $60-$70 in the market place. Its a hell of a deal at $32/bottle and, being a 2017, will be ready-to-drink pretty much as soon as its through bottle shock and will age nicely over the next decade+. Its an amazing cellar-defender, quite frankly, at a price you are not likely to ever see again.

Opaque with a kiss of deep ruby around the rim. Extended age in barrel has made this wine quite open knit aromatically as well as on the palate. Mountain terroir shows its transparency, with juicy black plum, white flowers and dried tobacco mingling with notes of mountain rocks, black licorice and graphite. The French oak aging deftly frames the flavors with cigar box, cedar and vanilla, converging into a black-fruited, palate-staining focus that lingers through the long, perfectly-balanced finish. Textbook gorgeous.
