Lot 551 comes to us from a formidable multi-generational Napa estate’s top-rated reserve program that regularly garners scores in the mid to high 90s. Made in the tradition of the Grand Vins of Bordeaux, it’s a 100% estate blend of Cab Sauv amplified by splashes of Merlot, Malbec, and Cab Franc. Only the finest clusters make it into this bottling each vintage, which is followed by no-expense-spared treatment in the cellar.

Black cherries and eucalyptus dominate the nose, accented by cedar, blueberry, iris, and dark cocoa. On entry, dry red-to-black fruit is joined by leather and baking spice, framed by medium+ acidity and full-grained tannins. The finish opens with dark fruit wrapped in barrel spices, black pepper, and vanilla blossoms, unfurling over great length. As it enters its drinking window, this wine promises continued evolution for years to come; if you can’t resist in the near term, a healthy decant should do the trick.

A surprise, and a delight…

"This wine proved quite a surprise for us. Expecting a more conventional Napa cab. , we instead found a perfumed, floral nose of rose and muguet. The palate opens with warm raisin and date, building into plum, with mellow tannins. Although all of this was a surprise to us, this is a delicious wine, beautifully balanced, with super-long legs, and highly drinkable. Although I would prefer a more conventional cab, with more tannin structure, to accompany a steak."

"I did not decanter this wine and will for sure my next bottle. Its lovely and even young pairs beautifully with steak. Its leather start and bold finish is only slightly tainted by the youthful tannins. I cant wait to have this wine again with a little more time. Not the overwhelming boldness of a typical big Napa cab but rather a smoother Bordeaux feel"
