Description

Lot 575 is a 100% single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from a historic site perched high atop Moon Mountain. The vineyard has been continually tapped by elite wineries across the North Coast for decades, one of whom held out on this wine all summer but finally acquiesced due to an increasingly perilous balance sheet. A top-tier house with a long history of crafting highly acclaimed Cabernets from mountain and valley floor terroirs alike, their showcase of volcanic minerality, vibrant acidity, and terrific ageability sells for north of $120/bottle direct from the tasting room (you can also find it at some posh steakhouses for over twice as much). The exact same juice with finest provenance is now available for almost 80% OFF!

The nose immediately boasts a strong sense of place, as volcanic minerality dances around dark fruit and cloves haloed by loamy, dusty earth, all underpinned by black cherry with hints of wild blueberries. The palate showcases that mineral-driven exposition, interwoven with dark chocolate, cherry reduction, and tobacco with a touch of leather. Medium+ acidity and perfectly integrated, persistent tannins frame the wine, leading to a finish carried by an initial spice before making way for lingering notes of rich dark fruit and crushed violet umami. Already expressive, this is approaching its prime and is only going to blossom more in the coming years.

If you’re seeking high-elevation Cabernet, the first stop on most folks’ treasure maps would probably be Napa’s famed mountain regions. But, as many of the connoisseurs on this list know, Sonoma is also home to some of the most historic mountain vineyards in California. Perched high in the Mayacamas just on the other side of a ridge from Mt. Veeder, the red, iron-rich vineyards of Moon Mountain possess all the elements of world-class mountain terroir: intense UV exposure, fast-draining soils, and steep slopes. Add an element of cool evening air from the Pacific and San Pablo Bay and you get exquisite mountain Cabernet that’s structured and powerful with a volcanic mineral edge.

Today’s wine comes from without question the most iconic vineyard on the mountain (if you know, you know), and we’ve scored a gem from this granddaddy of them all for under $25/bottle.

Over the decades, this vineyard's iron-rich Red Hill volcanic soils have absorbed winter rains yet drained them quickly, forcing vines to tunnel their roots deep into the fractured rock for sustenance. A southerly aspect perched high above the valley floor captures long hours of sunlight, ensuring fully ripened, concentrated grapes. Cool nights preserve natural acidity, giving wines both power and balance. With fruit this divine, our source spares no expense in the cellar, using the finest inputs tip to tail before aging for 24 months in French oak barrels to amplify its rugged mountain character.
