The Mansalto project is a massive 2,000 hectare property of wild mountainous terrain in the heart of Tuscany. Acquired by European investors in the early 2000's, no expense was spared developing the property (which is so large it includes three small municipalities and, now, gorgeous villa's for rent).
Along with my friend Marco Fantinel, legendary winemaker Andrea Paoletti of Solaia, Tignanello and Ornellaia fame as well as legendary consultant Stephane Derenoncourt of Bordeaux were brought in to develop the property and its high-altitude vineyards. Winemaker Gabriel Bruno manages the estate for Marco as well as makes the wines alongside Andrea and Stephane.
Needless to say, the wines are magnificent. Asides from a shipment of the 2016 vintage to one importer years ago, they are also non-existent here in the US and I am honored to present them to you today.
The first offering "La Commenda" is a DOCG-level Chianti from the sub-district of Chianti Colli Senesi and grown is the hills scaling the estate's Monte San Savino.
This wine would normally retail in the US for $20-$25 and is on pre-sell today, offered at $11/bottle. The 2018 scored 91-points from both Luca Moroni and James Suckling, the 2019 is every bit as good.
Medium garnet in the glass. Youthful bouquet of ripe cherry and rose petal are well-supported by earthy spice with pretty raspberry notes emerging with air. Rich and juicy on the palate, not at all the acidic Chianti of yore, with a well-delineated, if young, fruit and earth amalgam. Given the richness, I was shocked to find out that this wine has not seen oak. Clearly just a baby, this deftly-made DOCG Chianti has huge length and emerging complexity - a steal at $9/bottle. Drink or hold now and over the next decade.
