Lot 519
2023 Paso Robles Tannat

750ml

$50/bottle under the original label

Lot 519 is an estate-grown, 100% single-varietal Tannat from a producer that’s a local pioneer in everything from vineyard techniques to winemaking, with a cabinet bursting with accolades and 90+ point scores from the major publications consistently awarded over decades. They’ve masterfully harnessed the grape’s intensity, aging it 100% French oak barrels of the finest cooperage (40% new) to create a powerful, yet incredibly balanced bombshell. It’s one of the rarest wines in the country, and a great bet to be the most interesting bottle at your next wine tasting.

Immensely concentrated on the pour, the nose opens with black cherries, herbs, and plum, accented by tobacco leaf, raspberry sauce, and black cardamom. A delectably dry and focused entry reveals red-to-black fruit, licorice, and tobacco, framed by medium+ acidity and incredibly structured tannins – a sign of a great cellar contender. The astoundingly long finish is still youthful, with dominant barrel-influenced vanilla bean interwoven with blackcurrant and a subtle spice, offering glimpses of what’s to come. Drink now after a generous decant, but be sure to save some for your cellar to watch it evolve over the next decade plus.

What a Surprise

"Great fruit and has structure to last a while in the cellar. Will enjoy these over time as they mature but enjoyable now with decant."

John L. (5/5)

Good everyday option

"I like to try the less mainstream varietals occasionally. This was nice change of pace. Not outstanding but very good especially at the price point. I would recommend this if you like tannat."

steve m. (4/5)

Better than Uruguay

"Highly competitive tastes like French Bordeaux It had low acidity and rich fruit taste. Paired well with steak"

James S. (5/5)

¡Delicioso!

"Quite the hit at our family meal! This wine is fabulous with red meat, intense and robust dishes and general drinking pleasure. Buy it while you can!"

Sally A. (5/5)

Both the tannat and petit Verdot were excellent

"14%+ alcohol and fairly dry, pushing a Big wine, both are great tasting; Just reordered more petit Verdot and a half dozen Malbec to try your other wines!!"

John C. (5/5)

An unusual varietal - useful if you want a change.

"Rated 91 points: This came across as quite firm and powerful, likely unsurprising for this unusual varietal. This will likely need more age to mellow out. Held up very well on day #3, and mellowed out more."

John M. (3/5)

Fabulous

"Excellent wine, my whole family enjoyed, even the non-wine drinkers."

Gail (5/5)

A beautifully balanced change of gears…

"A deep purple-red pour, warm plum nose, with an abundance of cherry/plum/blackberry in the mouth, accompanied by moderate acidity, and moderate tannins. While tannat has never been my favorite varietal, this example is warm, intense, balanced, and a nice change from the usual varietals. And at this price, it represents remarkable value. Plus, it will be a interesting talking point with friends. We’ll be buying more."

Nigel B. (5/5)

Interesting grape

"I had little experience with this single but was rather surprised by the full body and nose."

peter m. (5/5)

Good for the money

"We love most of your wines, but the Tennant was not as good as others we have had. It was full flavored, but fell short in its lingering taste. Would buy again at this price."
