Lot 550 | 2021 Napa Valley Proprietary Red 750ml

Lot 550
2021 Napa Valley Proprietary Red

750ml

Over $200/bottle under the original label

Lot 550 is a powerful Left Bank-inspired blend comprised primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, backed by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The brainchild of a legendary Napa winery’s European-trained winemaker, it’s an exhibition of Napa terroir and virtuoso craftsmanship, and from a program that regularly garners scores in the mid-to-high 90s from a variety of critics.

Deep ruby in the glass, this wine opens with a stunning nose of dark cherries, wild blueberries, granite stone, and delicate purple florals, all seasoned with hints of black peppercorns and chili powder. A refined and focused palate entry reveals new leather, charcoal, and sweet tobacco before giving way to cherries and plums, all wrapped in medium acidity and velvety, medium-grained tannins. The finish is initially mineral and taut before unfurling with finesse: delicate waves of red-to-blue fruit transition to soft spice and tarmac, eventually culminating in lingering traces of violet and vanilla umami.

Beautiful Bordeaux style

"This is a fantastic dry Bordeaux style red with restraint and subtle complexity. More old world style than many DN offerings."

Tried to Cellar

"As a Grand Cru VIP, I drink lots of wine. I generally like to drink the red blends like lot 529 before the proprietary reds like lot 550. But after trying a bottle earlier this month, I decided not to wait. We're drinking a 550 one day, the 229 the next day and now mixing in the lot 590 Zin. Generally speaking, the proprietary reds are a bit better than the red blends, but also a bit pricier. I generally enjoy full bodied reds."

Outstanding Bordeaux-Influenced Red

"A deep ruby pour, 550 delivers a superb nose of blueberries, cherries and delicate florals. On the palate, plum and cherry accompany sweet tobacco and leather, with delicate spice, and a long, long finish with lovely minerality. This is a superbly crafted wine, with great finesse. Wish I’d picked-up a case or two."

Yummy but needs some time in the cellar

"This is a serious mouthful! Rich cab forward. Needs to cellar. I’ll check back in 2027."

Lot 550

"I ordered 6 bottles with the plan of holding them for a few years. I opened one to see where it stood in the aging process. It was very good already and hopefully I will have enough restraint to leave the other bottles sit as planned. I’m looking forward to what I think will be an outstanding bottle of wine in 3-5 years."

Great red blend

"I think it is hard to find a red blend/meritage that is not too pricey and delivers on a full and robust taste that stands up to steaks, etc. This one fits the bill. We need more!"

Brian N. (5/5)

Robust & Smooth

"This Cab & Merlot blend is robust yet very smooth with flavorful finish."

Mark O. (5/5)

More than I had eveb hoped for!

"Enjoying the first bottle in front of a roaring fire. This is a wine that truely lives up to its description. Should have bought two cases!"

Lee (5/5)

Full

"We had a bottle of the Proprietary Red last night, after letting it breathe for an hour it was a wonderful full bodied wine that compared well with a red that cost 3 times as much."

Ted L. (5/5)

Great blend

"Great red blend that needs some more time."
