Lot 616 is a 100% Syrah crafted in a beautifully balanced, intricately structured style that’s unmistakably Napa: rich but fresh, polished but not overdone, and layered with fruit and cracked peppercorns plus a savory intrigue that will make the wine geeks go bananas. It’s no wonder this family winery (going back over half a century in Napa and counting) sees no reason to dilute this rare, exceptional fruit, and keeps on producing a wine that has earned the respect of critics and collectors alike. This bottling has long been one of Napa’s finest, slotting in at over $60 a piece direct from the source. However, they were willing to part with a parcel of this beautiful wine, which we’ve secured for over 70% OFF!

Ripe and robust blackberries and blueberries emerge from the glass, wrapped around a core of dark cherries and cracked black pepper, all haloed by leather and dark chocolate. The palate is a showcase in Napa Syrah excellence: dark fruit, weathered leather, cocoa powder, and exceptional structure are backed by plentiful, grippy tannins and expertly balanced acidity, all uplifted by black peppercorn spice. The finish reveals clove then spice, shifting to boysenberry, dark cherries, and vanilla blossom on a long, dry exit. Great at the BBQ and even the Thanksgiving table.

Syrah doesn’t exactly grow on trees in Napa, but we’ve plucked another fabulous jewel.

A historic northern Rhône variety first recorded in the 18th century, Syrah has long played beautifully with Grenache and Mourvèdre in its native France. In California, much of the grape’s reputation was built along the Central Coast, where it often anchors Rhône-style GSM blends. Napa is a different story. Here, tucked among the valley’s famous vineyards is a small but vibrant Syrah scene that rewards enthusiasts willing to look deeper, with the best examples showing the same qualities as all great single-vineyard Napa reds: clear expression of site, structure, and natural power. Accounting for only about 1% of all of Napa’s bearing vineyard acres, true single-varietal Napa Syrah releases are a rarity, but we’ve found one that earned the standalone treatment.

Syrah vineyards are few and far between in Napa Valley, but once you find them, their dark berries are easy to distinguish. Our source’s vines are rooted to rocky, free-draining soils that ensure maximum concentration. Because Syrah enjoys hotter temperatures, they chose the warmest pockets on their estate to cultivate this grape. A classic 2024 growing season only amplified the fruit’s intensity, and by harvest, the berries were packed with flavor. Extended barrel aging with a high percentage of new oak added polish and intricacy.
