Hunting for peak quality Rosé here is harder than you think. Every estate as far as the eye can see has Cabernet on the menu, but the number of producers actually committed to purpose-built Rosé crafted using prime grapes and top winemaking inputs are few and far between. And the ones who are? They typically don’t produce more than what’s needed for their club members and tasting room visitors, so these are difficult targets to chase. Thankfully, we’ve hit the bullseye.

Lot 631 is a direct-press Rosé from a pioneering family with over four generations of winegrowing lineage in Napa – a claim that only a handful in the valley can boast. Built on a shimmering core of Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of other Bordelaise varietals from some of the finest valley floor and benchland sites in Napa, the result is a unique Bordeaux-style Rosé as complex as it is refreshing. Given the small pool of possible sources, the safest price we can cite is that under their label it goes for over $50/bottle (and that’s if you can snag what remains after the allocations are claimed). The 2025 Napa Valley vintage is already being described as a classic – one of the coolest summers in recent memory allowed for unhurried ripening, producing elegant grapes with phenomenal depth. Farmed specifically for Rosé production, our source’s vines were picked early to capture enhanced freshness and natural acidity. Direct-press Rosé demands precision at the press – gentle extraction allows the juice just enough time in contact with skins to draw out color, flavor, and texture. Too long, and the wine becomes dark and overly tannic. Too short, and the wine comes out thin. They nailed the balance as usual, and swiftly moved the precious juice to age in chilly stainless steel tanks, preserving all its vibrancy and fruit.

Pouring a deep salmon color into the glass, the nose is potent with cherry, dried herbs, lush fruit, and shiso leaf, crowned by swirls of strawberries and mint. The wine envelops the palate with juicy, expressive red fruits spread out across medium-plus acidity and a deftly balanced weight; this is purpose-built Rosé with real structure, and a pleasant halo of uplifted spice to boot. The finish is long and dry, filled with umami of red berries, blossoms, and crushed river stones that carry on and on. Serve this beauty at cellar temp.
