Lot 647 is one of Napa’s flagship Bordeaux-style reds – a measuring stick for the entire industry from an estate whose reputation is built on decades of relentless dedication to quality. Drawing inspiration from the First Growths across the pond while expressing the singular character of Napa Valley, this is a Cabernet-dominated blend with small inclusions of the other core Bordelaise grapes, all grown from vineyard holdings that are nothing short of legendary. Masters among masters, their Old World sensibility and ravenous application of no-expense-spared modern precision winemaking has crafted a bona fide masterpiece. Prices for this direct from the winery are a country mile over $200 a pop, so we are absolutely ecstatic that our negotiations have brought it down to only $31/bottle.

A luxurious nose bursts out of the glass, opening with ripe cherries and dark fruit before unveiling swaths of blue fruit, garden herbs, and accents of eucalyptus and dark chocolate. The palate is a masterclass in Oakville refinement: dark cherry, blackberry, savory herbs, compote, new soft leather, and baking spice are all framed by exceptional mineral tension, acidity, and polished velvety tannins. The finish is rife with red fruit, crushed florals, and spice, while vanilla and iris trade waves endlessly. Phenomenal.
