Few appellations command such outsized prestige from so modest a footprint, but Stags Leap continues to earn mythical status – Napa’s Valley’s smallest AVA produces some of the most coveted red wines on the planet not only because of sheer scarcity, but for their almost supernatural marriage of power and finesse. That union is on beautiful display here – a masterfully crafted singular expression of fabled terroir, brimming with an indomitable soul and highlighting everything that’s made this little enclave the stuff of legend. With such a tiny pool of possible source programs to begin with, we can divulge very little about its origin specs, so let’s just say it’s well into triple digits. Negotiations were surprisingly intense, but it remains a buyer’s market – when the dust settled, we’d put pen to paper and secured an exquisite Stags Leap Cab for under $30 a bottle!

The nose engulfs you with seductive aromas of reduced black cherries, dark plums, and blackberries, bolstered by violets and wild strawberry. A halo of cedar, cloves, and graphite lends additional depth. Palate entry is unfathomably elegant: full-bodied yet not overpowering, dark fruits are interwoven with espresso, chocolate, and subtle earthy tones. Only the second Stags Leap red we’ve procured in over five years, the vineyards for this wine saw a mild spring in 2024, allowing bud break and flowering to proceed without a hitch. That stellar start, combined with plenty of moisture in the soil thanks to a second consecutive wet winter, set up the vines perfectly to take on a hot summer. August brought a welcome respite, followed by a very favorable September of warm days and cool nights leading the grapes in top form across the finish line. 2024 has been described as “generous,” “expressive,” and “lively” – this bottling delivers on all three counts, adding extraordinary depth and the utmost refinement for good measure.
