Description

Lot 557 is a refreshing and refined 100% estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc. Only a handful of houses in Paso craft Sauv Blancs of this caliber, so to protect our source, we agreed to declassify it from Adelaida District and keep its exact price under wraps. Originally sold in the neighborhood of $50/bottle under the original label, they decided it was worth parting with a little bit of this rare wine to secure cash up front. We were happy to strike a deal – this marvelous Sauvignon Blanc that was previously an insider exclusive is yours today at OVER 65% OFF!

The nose bursts with a tropical exuberance, presenting wet stone and lime wrapped in layers of guava and passionfruit, with a subtle thread of chervil and slate. The palate entry is full-flavored for a Sauvignon Blanc, driven by grapefruit and additional tropical fruits with a kiss of ginger spice, all framed by a bracing acidity. The finish is mineral-laced and resolutely clean, tapering off with long, tropical umami accents with hints of apple blossom.

Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular white wines in California, but in Paso Robles it accounts for only 2% of total plantings, taking a back seat to white Rhône varietals such as Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. However, in the Santa Lucia Mountains west of Paso, the Adelaida District possesses favorable Sauvignon Blanc terroir. Calcareous soils similar to those in the Loire Valley (the varietal’s spiritual home) produce grapes with vibrant acidity, while strong coastal breezes keep canopies clean. Cool nights develop elegance, while Paso’s hot days ensure full ripeness.

Only a handful of Paso producers cultivate Sauv Blanc at a high level, and in normal circumstances, these offerings simply aren’t available because what little is produced sells through tasting rooms and allocation-only programs. Due to the current market appetite, we were offered access to one of these top-tier expressions, and we’ve locked it in to the tune of $16 per bottle!

In 2024, a stormy winter rejuvenated soils and allowed vines to develop large canopies early in the growing season, helping keep clusters shaded throughout the summer. In this part of Paso, the elevation and coastal breezes keep the heat in check, and cool nights helped the grapes lock in vibrant acidity. Though yields were lower in this vintage, the grapes that made their way to the cellars boasted immense concentration and peak ripeness – a great omen for the 2024 Paso vintage.
