Lot 517 is a 100% single-varietal Petit Verdot from a family-owned multigenerational Rutherford estate with a cult following for their intricately crafted small-batch wines. They have the winemaking chops to take on this tricky grape, and their stellar reputation has given them access to some of the finest Petit Verdot vineyards in the country. Lucky for us, a bountiful harvest combined with recent market conditions presented the rarest of opportunities, and we had no intention of letting it pass us by. Deeply colored as a good Petit Verdot should be, this is not an ink bomb – a testament to a meticulous extraction by skilled winemakers. The nose opens with pomegranate, chocolate, blackberry coulis, and uplifted cranberries, haloed by white pepper and fresh mint. On the palate, mocha and cherries coalesce with layers of spice and silky, plentiful tannins, all framed by medium+ acidity. A dry, barrel-driven finish of caramel, spice, and vanilla resonates over great length.
