Description

Lot 596 is a single-vineyard 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, farmed by a legendary vineyard manager in one of the most acclaimed sites in the appellation. Bottlings here routinely garner mid to high 90s scores from all the major critics, and this one unsurprisingly stopped us in our tracks: a pure expression of world-class terroir, marrying depth and complexity with the hallmark refinement of great mountain Cabernet. An absolute bomb of a mountain red sold in very limited quantities under its original label at prices beginning at the $130/bottle mark, we’ve landed this wine at an astounding price under $25 a bottle.

Pouring a deeply colored core with a translucent rim, the wine announces its mountain pedigree the moment it hits the glass: the nose bursts forth with dark cherry fruit, crushed gravel, cassis, soft leather, and wild bramble, haloed by freshly turned soil and a kiss of eucalyptus. On the bold entry, boysenberries, blackberries, and chocolate take the forefront and are backed by perfectly integrated leather tones and a hint of nutmeg. Medium-plus acidity and plush, plentiful tannins carry the wine to a long, dry finish where barrel spice and resinous fruit umami coalesce before culminating with crushed violet and vanilla blossom. Perfect with filet mignon or A5 Wagyu.

Ask any Napa collector what’s on their wish list, and they’ll probably have a Cabernet from Howell Mountain near the very top. Vineyards planted in the harsh, nutrient-poor volcanic soils of this AVA struggle mightily to survive, producing low yields of tiny berries with thick skins and explosive concentration. These precious grapes are some of the most prized in all of wine country, but with such a limited crop size (and farming costs inordinately expensive in the rugged terrain), it’s no wonder that prices for the wines up here are sky-high.

We’re delighted to announce that after months of extended negotiations, we’ve secured an allocation from a famed estate with the finest pedigree – our second release in our Big Fall Series is a blue-chip Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon for over 80% OFF!

Grapes with extraordinary concentration are the result of vines planted to fast-draining volcanic soils with a southerly aspect high above the fog line, giving the berries strong UV exposure that thickens their skins, increasing tannin and phenolic development. During the 2022 season, the site’s high elevation gave protection from September heatwaves, helping them maintain ample freshness. The result is exquisite juice that was aged for over 20 months in French oak barrels of the finest cooperage – while deal terms prevent us from stating the new oak percentage, trained palates will clearly recognize it was on the higher side – a perfect complement to the wine’s natural intensity.
