Description

Lot 597 is a single-vineyard, estate-grown 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a producer long recognized for crafting small lots of terroir-driven wines that routinely earn mid-90s scores from top critics. In this exceptional vintage, their deft hand has yielded a wine that marries power with impeccable refinement, all while expressing the winery’s signature sense of place. With sales slowing all over the valley, they faced some tough choices. Per usual with our acquisitions these days, NDA prohibits us listing the original price, but this particular bottling goes for well north of the $100/bottle mark. Under our label, this stunner is yours for just $23/bottle!

Powerful plum and cassis draw you into the glass, unfolding with layers of clay dust, menthol, and a subtle green-pepper nuance. The palate is broad and deeply structured, packed with concentrated dark fruit, soft leather, and coffee tones bolstered by medium+ acidity and plentiful dry, grippy tannins. The finish stretches at length, opening with wet stones and spice before crescendoing into blackberry coulis, crushed florals, and fresh vanilla blossoms. Still in its youth, the best is yet to come, though we highly recommend a 24-hour decant if you can’t resist.

The star Cabs keep on coming.

Just down the road from Yountville and Stags Leap in Napa’s bay-influenced heartland, Oak Knoll’s fluvial loam soils have long produced some of wine country’s most classic high-end Cabernets. Showcasing an understated power and refinement not found anywhere else in Napa, it’s a natural transition as we make our way from the rugged mountain sites to lower altitudes on this fall journey through the valley. With a spectacular vintage like 2023, all the signature elements of this AVA are magnified: freshness, purity, precision, and age-worthy structure without heaviness.

The source vineyard sits on gravelly, well-drained soils that encourage low-vigor vines to produce intensely flavored berries. Thanks to its proximity to the cooling maritime influence of San Pablo Bay, the site enjoys an extended growing season, which was especially pronounced during a consistently cool 2023. With no weather-related stress, the fruit ripened slowly and evenly, achieving full phenolic maturity and a near-perfect balance of sugar to acidity before being hand-harvested in October. In the cellar, an extended maceration built depth and texture before 20 months in French oak barrels (50% new) transformed the wine into the polished beauty on offer today.
